Acne Treatments
Dermacare offers several treatment options for controlling acne. An individualized treatment plan, dependent on several factors (severity and type of acne, skin type, medical history, patient's lifestyle, etc.) will be developed by our team of medical professionals and aestheticians to provide the patient with optimal results. This plan may include chemical peels, medical microdermabrasions, Blu-U light therapy, prescription-grade skin care products (Obagi or SkinMedica acne systems), Levulan® PDT (Photodynamic Therapy) or a combination of treatments.

What is Levulan® PDT?
Levulan is an effective FDA-approved treatment for Grade 1 or 2 AKs (actinic keratosis
“pre-cancerous lesions”) of the face or scalp. Photodynamic Therapy is also clinically proven to treat more severe types of acne. The process is as follows: First, a medical microdermabrasion treatment will be performed to prepare the skin for the Levulan application by removing dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. Next, Levulan is applied topically to the treatment area and left on the skin for up to 3 hours. This period is called “incubation”. An intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment is then performed to "activate" the Levulan, followed by BLU-U light therapy to complete the incubation process. A series of 4 treatments scheduled every 4 weeks are generally recommended to achieve maximum results.
What is BLU-U Light Therapy?
BLU-U light therapy is FDA cleared for the treatment of moderate inflammatory acne. The narrow-band blue light causes a photodynamic effect that kills bacteria within the pylosebaceous gland. A BLU-U session is non-invasive, pain-free, and usually lasts approximately 20 minutes. Common treatment areas include the face, chest, and back.
